A glass floor allows light to pass through a concrete patio or slab reducing the need for artificial lighting in the area below and providing a natural source of daylight. The introduction of light through the core of a building can transform what might otherwise be a dull claustrophobic Area. With the changing arc of the sun the effects of the light can add a welcome ambiance to the area. The glass used can be either clear or opaque, both creating their own feeling and ambiance.

Glass can be used as a floor panel or stair tread. Safety is paramount when glass is to be used in these situations and Cloud 9 Skylights is able to advise and specify the glass thickness and construction. A laminated glass is always recommended to ensure that the failure of one of the panes does not lead to catastrophic failure. Glass thickness would be decided by the specific requirements of the site. Typically speaking glass thickness can be from 31.5mm to 41.5 but thicker glass may be required in some instances. The thickness of the glass means that it can be relatively heavy and the support structure and fixings are critical, in some cases a structural engineer will be consulted and a structural certificate issued.
Care has to be taken with the finished surface to avoid slipping. An etched or printed surface can improve grip and aid against slipping. Wet locations are particularly prone to slipping.
